DJ Kool Herc
DJ Kool Herc hosted parties in the early 70’s which harbored the birth of a Culture later to be known as Hip Hop. He coined the term “B-Boy,” and had his own dance crew called The Herculoids. He invented the music genre called “Breaks” by extending the break part of James Brown’s records. The “B” in B-Boy stood for “Break” because we danced to the “break” of the song. 10 years later, the media learned about this dance and created the term “Breakdance.” Herc Wikipedia Link
Afrika Bambaataa
Afrika Bambaataa coined the term “Hip Hop.” Bam started as a feared outlaw gang leader of the Black Spades in the Bronx, New York, during the 1960s and 70s. He later renamed the gang to “The Organization” and shifted its focus towards helping the community. After returning from a trip to Africa, Bambaataa converted to Islam and renamed the group the Zulu Nation. Transitioning from a feared gang lord to a role model and eventually a global celebrity, he recognized early on the emerging arts that provided at-risk youth with a positive outlet.
